How quickly do new yachts lose value?

How quickly do new yachts depreciate after purchase? Here the situation is almost no different from land vehicles. After launching a boat and handing it over to its owner, it immediately loses 15% of its original price. In the future, the boat continues to lose value by about 10% annually. However, this trend only applies to the first four years of the vessel’s life.

After five years of owning a boat, the loss of its value is no longer so significant, provided that it is operated correctly and without accidents, with scheduled maintenance work carried out in accordance with the regulations. Over the years, the price of most quality boats on the secondary market continues to decrease slightly, and some models can maintain their value at a certain level, even taking into account inflation.

In addition, in some cases, the prices for some models of pre-owned yachts can, on the contrary, increase and bring profit to the owner upon resale in a particular country. But this happens extremely rarely.

In general, buying a not very used boat is a pretty smart decision. Since any modern yacht consists of many complex components, there are many potential points of failure due to defects or poor build quality that may only become apparent after some time.

In the first two or three years of operation, all the childhood diseases of the boat and its equipment will most likely be discovered and fixed by the previous owner and the shipyard under warranty. But, of course, there remains an element of luck and the expectation that the owner was really careful and treated the boat with love, because even a surveyor with special equipment cannot check absolutely everything.

You should also keep in mind the costs of owning a yacht, which average 10-15% of the price of new boats per year.
